Holbrook Meals on Wheels, Created - Monday, 28 November 2011

Holbrook Meals on Wheels Service Inc. held its AGM on Tuesday 11th October.  The meeting had an excellent turn out of over 30 people and started promptly at 2 o’clock at the CTC Hall.  Thank you to all those members who travelled from Walla Walla to attend. The President, Ian Harpley welcomed everyone and last year’s meeting minutes were read and passed.  Then the President’s and Coordinator’s Reports were read.  What an exciting year it has been for Holbrook – Walla Walla Meals on Wheels.  These two groups have joined their strengths to give an excellent service to their areas.

After discussion at the last committee meeting and the AGM it has been decided that a subcommittee will be formed at Walla Walla.  A meeting to form the Walla subcommittee will be held at 2pm on Monday 14th November.  All interested persons are welcome to attend this meeting which is being held at the Lutheran church hall.

The Holbrook meals come from My Chef in Wagga and give a wide variety, including frozen meals that can be heated by clients in their own home.  The Walla Walla meals are prepared at St Pauls College kitchen or clients can choose to have the My Chef frozen meals.  Both these options give clients an extensive range of meals and choice.

Holbrook & Walla Walla Meals on Wheels support frail aged people and younger people with disabilities to stay in their own home and to continue to be part of the community not only through the meals service, but also through a Social Support Program.

Sue Winnett’s Coordinator’s report included information regarding staff training days, a volunteer’s day out in June, and staff attending the NSW Meals on Wheels conference.

Office Bearers elected:  President is Ian Harpley,  Secretary is Gai Langford, Treasurer is Bob Langford and Margaret McNeill is Vice President.  These people continue on from last year and give excellent service to Meals on Wheels.  The Committee Members elected are Jill Winnett, Brenda Cronin, and Murray Locke.   Irene Lister and Jan Sweeney were elected as Publicity Officers.

The meeting closed at 2:45pm and afternoon tea was enjoyed by everyone.

CROQUET NEWS, Created - Saturday, 26 November 2011

In July we started a competition called the “Battered Ball” between us, Albury and Wodonga Clubs.  This year Albury and Walla Walla entered two teams.  This year’s results were Albury White – 6 wins, Albury Green – 5 wins, Walla Walla Green – 4 wins, Walla Walla White – 3 wins and Wodonga – 2 wins.

Next year will be our 10th anniversary, so we’ve decided to have a Friday night celebration on February 17, 2012.  At the moment we are busy finalising details to make it a fun night, with invitations to be sent out in the New Year.  After a couple of croquet games, we will then sit down for an evening meal together.  Menu etc to be advised in due course.

Golf croquet is now starting play time on Saturdays and Mondays, at 8.30 am.  If you are new to town or would just like to have a go, you would be most welcome to join us.

Walla Walla Lion's Club, Created - Friday, 25 November 2011

The Walla Walla Lions Club were involved in the Burrumbuttock Fair. It was our job to operate the gate and we also provided the services of “Squeeky the Clown”. The $300 we received will be put back into the Burrumbuttock community.

The Lions Club Christmas cakes will be available for sale soon. Our fruit cakes are delicious and there are 2 choices—a 1kg cake for $10 or a 1.5kg cake for $14. We really appreciate the support we receive from the community and believe our cakes are very good value for  money.

Our guest speaker in September was Pastor Mark Doecke from St Paul’s College who gave us a very interesting talk on his work with the Aboriginal community in central Australia. Thank you Mark.

Our guest speaker for November will be Wilfred Krause.

Please keep saving your newspapers and we will pick them up on the first Saturday of each month.

New members are always welcome.

Trevor Barber (President)

Health in a Hurry from the Murray—car 112 wrap up …, Created - Wednesday, 23 November 2011

EsCarpade 2011began for us on Fri Oct 14th. We arrived in Bendigo at lunchtime after a leisurely 1/2 hour drive. This was a striking contrast to last year when we trekked for a day and a half to Tamworth. The care then had to pass the scrutineering process by the Camp Quality mechanics.

The next morning we were up early in readiness for the rally start. We shared the diving & navigating & each of us experienced different terrain & challenges in these roles but we all had a wonderful time. Each leg of the event was about 225km so each day we drove an average of 450km, which included the forest, the desert, narrow winding tracks,  hills  & rough terrain. Again our car survived the trek with minimal damage.

If you’ve seen the car you will have noticed the bed on the roof. This proved to be as asset. When the car overheated & we were stuck in the middle of nowhere between Naracoorte & Pinaroo, we had a comfortable place to relax out of the way of the snakes & lizards, as it was too hot in the car.  And when we were stuck in queues waiting for bogged cars ahead of us to be dragged out, the bed was enjoyed by many other entrants. We also used it as a fund raise—Camp Quality staff auctioneer off ‘a night on the roof of car 112’, raising $150! The winner chose not to sleep there,  preferring his motel room, but he did enjoy his morning tea on the roof!

Camp Quality receives no government funding so they rely completely on donations, fundraising and particularly on EsCarpade, their major fundraiser. A massive $1.4 million was raised this year

Our focus now is on EsCarpade 2012. We will be looking for sponsors again so if you can help or know of a business who might like to be advertised on the car, please let us know.

Health in a Hurry from the Murray—Car 112—Adelle, Helen, Jill, Kelle, Lisa, Maryanne and Michelle.

Walla Walla Anglers Club News, Created - Tuesday, 22 November 2011

Our October meeting saw lovely weather again and we had our Christmas Party early to beat the rush. This event was well attended with over 20 members present. A good time was had by all.  Although the fish weren’t biting all that well some good catches were made.

Our next fundraiser will be a ‘Powerball draw’.

It is $20 per number and runs for 10 weeks. There are 45 numbers. The first number drawn and/or the powerball number gets $20 each week. Contact a committee member at Thursday raffles to purchase a number. When all numbers are sold the draws will begin. Winners will be notified each week.

(It is possible to win both the first number and the powerball number at the same time – you have to have more than 1 ticket).

New members are always welcome, so please see Dino or Matthew if you would like to join (or contact the staff at the Hotel).

As this is our final news  before Christmas I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed and safe festive season .

Next meeting is Monday 28th November @ 7.30pm at the Walla Hotel.

Gone fishing

The fire season is upon us once again with the official proclaimed period having started on 1st November.  Permits will be issued for hazard reduction from the Albury fire control centre office.  This will be for grass only, not timber.  Everyone should have asset protection measures well under way by now;

· Mowing your grass regularly.

· Removing excess ground fuels (long grass, dead leaves, sticks and branches).

· Clearing leaves, twigs and bark from the roof and gutter.

· Trimming low lying branches 2 metres from the ground surrounding your home.

· Enclosing open areas under the house including decks.

· Install fine steel wire mesh on all windows, doors and vents.

· Relocate flammable items away from your home including, woodpiles, paper, boxes, hanging baskets, garden, furniture, mower fuel and paint.

· Seal all gaps in external roof and wall cladding.

· You need to have a Bush Fire Survival Plan for you and your family and  fire fighting equipment serviced.

There was a new Captain elected at our AGM back in August.  Shai Feuerherdt was elected  Captain replacing John Jacob after 35 years in the role.  David Paech was elected President after John Wenke didn’t seek re-election.  Other positions were Senior Deputy – Craig Wenke, Deputies - David Paech, Lee Churches, Mat Lauritzen and Ray Jacob.
